Is Your Kitchen Sink Drain Clogged in Springfield Missouri

Is Your Kitchen Sink Drain Clogged in Springfield Missouri?

In most households, the kitchen is the heart of the home... That is until you find your kitchen sink drain clogged in Springfield Missouri. Most of us have been there. You're trying to clean up after dinner only to find the water won't drain and you are left with a sink full of dirty dishes until the plumber arrives. Here at United Plumbing, we believe it’s important for homeowners to be well equipped with the knowledge to keep their plumbing system running smoothly from day to day.

One of our favorite plumbing tips is teaching people how to keep their kitchen drain clear from debris and prevent those pesky clogs.

Avoid putting large amounts of food down the disposal

Let’s be honest, we live in the age of convenience and often times that means taking shortcuts in our day to day routine. Most kitchen drain clogs are completely preventable. While your garbage disposal can handle most of the small stuff, it’s not designed to chop up large amounts of food at once.

The most common foods we find clogging the disposal and drains are pasta noodles and potato peels.

The invention of the garbage disposal is a beautiful thing. Continue to use the disposal for what it was designed to do, like chopping up dinner plate scraps and small amounts of leftovers that have gone bad while sitting in the fridge waiting to be eaten.

Avoid putting grease down the drain

Over time, grease builds up in your kitchen line. The buildup of grease causes your kitchen line to become more susceptible to clogs. Ideally, it’s best to avoid putting grease down the drain altogether, but anyone who has experience in the kitchen knows that sometimes (i.e. when straining hamburger meat) putting grease down the drain in unavoidable. In such a situation, be sure to run plenty of hot soapy water down the drain immediately after.

How to clean the leftover debris from your pipes

We recommend cleaning your sink drain using this simple method once per week to help keep your drain flowing properly. Note: this tip will not work if you already have a clog.

  1. Plug your kitchen sink and fill it to the top with hot soapy water.
  2. Pull the drain plug. This will allow the head pressure from the full sink of water to clean the debris from your kitchen sink drain.
  3. Enjoy the benefits of a fresh and clean drain.
