If you've been experiencing plumbing problems, you've probably been most concerned with the inconvenience of something not working or draining properly. You might have even considered the potential property damage from a water leak that goes undetected for an extended period of time.
But one thing that you might not have worried about is how plumbing problems can also create an issue with unwanted pests in your home.
There are lots of unsavory creatures that are attracted to moisture. Some examples include cockroaches, mice, termites, rats, silverfish, and carpenter ants, just to name a few.
Many of these pests like to nest in moist wood that has been affected by water leaks. Over time, they grow and multiply, creating even more extensive problems for you to deal with.
And if you have any problems with sewage backing up into a basement or crawlspace, in addition to the smells and mess to clean up, you could also end up having unwanted pests to deal with.
If you’ve started to notice an increased number of pests in your home lately, your first thought is probably to call the exterminator. But you also need to consider that poor plumbing could be part of the problem. If you don't get that fixed, then the drain flies or other pest control problems will just keep coming back.
What parts of your plumbing should be examined to avoid problems from unwanted pests?
Faucets and shower heads can be a major source of leaks. Don't assume that any remaining water after using them is just residual. Take some time to check them out.
Is water still coming out after you've turned it off? Even at a slow drip? A slow drip can indicate a leak, and that can become a big problem over time. Also be certain to check underneath the sink and around the base of the faucet handles. These are often overlooked areas for leaks.
Many plumbing leaks happen in crawl spaces, because these areas often unseen for long periods of time. It’s also where many pests tend to thrive because of the moisture. Take a look inside your crawl space to see if any leaks may be hiding in or dripping down your walls.
Any appliances that use water can eventually leak and become breeding grounds for pests. Check the hoses and fasteners around your washing machine, dishwasher, water heater or anything else that uses water for leaks.
